Tips for Braaing on a Budget
Do you want to braai up a feast for your family without breaking the bank? Be strategic about what you cook over the coals and you’ll be able to serve a fantastic meal without straining your finances. We have a useful list of braai tips that will make your next braai the best and most affordable one yet!
- Presentation is important. If you’ve got your presentation on point, then you’re halfway there. You can create a mouth-watering platter by using your LK’s Wooden Steak Board to serve your braai meat in style. Add colour to your palette by grilling veggies and you’re ready to serve!
- Quality meat for cheap. What is a lekker braai without lekker tasting meat? When braaing on a budget, boerewors or spicy chicken wings is a must. They’re quick to braai, you can add your favourite sweet or savoury basting sauce and can be served as a side dish or as the main attraction. Want to make a delicious and juicy marinade? Add the following ingredients to a bowl and baste away; tomato sauce, soy sauce, fruit chutney and olive oil.
- The best braai side. What comes to mind when you think of a South African side dish for the braai? You’re right, POTATO SALAD! Chef Benny Masekwameng, judge on The Ultimate Braai Master, shared his potato salad recipe with a twist: slice your par-cooked potatoes and toss them in a hot pan with olive oil. Add a dash of salt and pepper, then lower the heat and add in sliced onions. Leave to slowly caramelize and infuse with the potatoes. Voila!
- Dessert on the braai. The best desserts are made on the open fire. Grill your favourite fruits for a few minutes and serve with ice-cream or custard on the side. Another option could be a true South African fondue, where you add a pot on low heat, toss in pieces of chocolate. Give every guest a skewer to dip their marsmallows and fresh fruits in the chocolate.
Nothing brings friends and family together than a lekker braai- on a budget!
